Who provides training?

The short answer is: Registered Training Organisations (commonly referred to as RTOs).

They are authorised by Government to deliver training that is recognised around Australia. RTOs range from companies and industry and professional associations, to schools, TAFE institutes and Adult Community and Further Education (ACFE) colleges. All must meet nationally recognised standards of quality.

Choosing an RTO is an important step in training your apprentice or trainee.

Government Funded Training Program

The Government Funded Training Program website has a listing of TAFE and private RTOs which are eligible to receive Government funding for apprenticeship or traineeship training. The website offers apprenticeship and traineeship training information and provider details. Other RTOs may offer apprenticeship and traineeship training but you will need to pay for this.

You can search for a provider at: http://gftp.otte.vic.gov.au/gftp/Tims/attp/applications/search.asp

Remember, even though there are nearly 1000 apprenticeship and traineeship pathways available, not all training courses are available as apprenticeships or traineeships.

Your obligations

An apprenticeship and traineeship is an integrated work and training arrangement. You are required to release the apprentice and trainee for structured off-the-job training. You must also provide on-the-job training, and supervision and support of your apprentice or trainee. There are also workplace based training standards for apprenticeships and traineeships that you must meet.

Your RTO has a big part to play but so do you.

Talk with your AAC if you are unsure of your training responsibilities.

Australian Apprenticeship Centres (AAC)

You can also contact your nearest AAC. You can call 1800 639 629 or go to the Australian Apprenticeships website. This is a comprehensive Government website where you can search by postcode for the centre nearest you.

The 500 AACs across Australia can give expert advice on everything you need to know about apprenticeships and traineeships. They can take you through the process of choosing an RTO and help you select the right apprenticeship or traineeship for your business.

The Government website training.com.au has also great advice on what to consider when choosing an RTO and a handy postcode search to find an RTO near you.
